Facebook’s sign up page — Dutch versus English, not the same thing!!

English:

  • Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life.

Dutch:

  • Met Facebook ben je verbonden en deel je alles met iedereen in je leven.

Literary translated: With Facebook you are connected and you share everything with everybody in your life.

Not the same thing, I would say. And not necessarily that what Facebook wants to tell it’s users. The Dutch text is frightening.

That’s what you notice when you start working in translation/language localisation…

  1. yeah, i’m from Germany & several english slogans used in Germany are understood differently than an english speaking person does. one funny example :
few years back one german parfumery’s slogan was “come in & find out” but it can be understood literally, “come in & find the way out”, which was surely not the intention.
translations & language in general can be a very tricky thing.
but also within the same language can its usage be tricky as well :
i have to laugh still when i think of “we package vacuum too”. 😀
