TIME Picks the Top 10 Photos of 2013

The name “Top 10” makes it sound like we will see something pleasant. For most of these photos, the opposite is true. They depict horrific events which we wish would never happen in the first place.

#10: “I only tried to record the events through my camera. I had to document what I saw, one way or another. This is a war, and I was in the middle of an unbearable moment.” I cannot help but fear for the psychological consequences of the war, and the lasting effects for the survivors when it has ended.
